Libraries constitute contemporary institutions of knowledge, information, learning, culture, and social engagement. Their institutional role extends beyond the traditional functions of collecting, organizing, preserving, and providing access to information resources, encompassing the development of programmes, initiatives, and activities that respond to the evolving educational, informational, cultural, and social needs of the communities they serve. Within the contemporary information environment, libraries function as spaces that facilitate access to knowledge, foster literacy and learning, support creative and lifelong learning, and promote meaningful engagement with information, knowledge, and culture (Walter, 2020; Benson et al., 2019; IFLA, 2013; IFLA, 2022).
At the same time, contemporary academic libraries are progressively expanding their institutional mission and societal engagement by developing outreach initiatives, partnerships, and programmes that extend beyond the boundaries of the traditional academic community. From this perspective, the academic library can function as a bridge between the university and the wider society, facilitating the dissemination of scholarly knowledge while responding to broader educational and social needs. Within this expanded institutional framework, the development of organized educational initiatives addressed to children and educators within an academic environment constitutes a particularly significant and emerging area of practice.
Although educational activities for children have historically constituted an important area of activity within public and school libraries, the systematic development of corresponding initiatives within academic libraries remains comparatively limited. Nevertheless, international examples demonstrate that academic libraries can develop programmes for children and young learners that strengthen their social outreach, foster engagement with local communities, and create opportunities for collaboration with educators, families, community organizations, and university stakeholders (Schneider, 2003; Dougherty, 2024).
The development of such initiatives is closely associated with the established significance of children’s early and sustained engagement with books and reading (Yong-Sook et al., 2015; Maricic & Stakic, 2017; Pulimeno et al., 2020; Azamovich, 2021). Shared reading and sustained exposure to stories contribute to children’s language development, emergent literacy, reading skills, and broader cognitive development. Furthermore, access to diverse collections and opportunities for children to select their own reading materials can strengthen reading engagement and contribute to the development of positive attitudes towards books and reading (Allington, 2006; Krashen, 2004; Ross, McKechnie, & Rothbauer, 2016; Shin, 2004). Early participation in literacy-oriented activities, storytelling, and engagement with libraries is also associated with positive conditions for school readiness and the subsequent development of literacy competencies (Jordan, Snow, & Porche, 2000; National Center for Education Statistics, 1998).
Against this conceptual and research-informed background, the Children’s Section of the University of Cyprus Library has been operating since 2018 within the Information Centre – “Stelios Ioannou” Library and addresses children from infancy to 12 years of age. Its operation is grounded in the development and implementation of a structured, academically informed, and evidence-based programme for children, centred on books, reading, learning, creativity, and engagement with knowledge. A fundamental objective of the Children’s Section is to establish a coherent and continuous reading and learning trajectory that begins in infancy and continues throughout the preschool and school years.
Within this framework, innovative and scientifically grounded programmes are designed and implemented for infants, preschool children, and school-age children. These programmes are developed in accordance with the developmental characteristics, educational needs, and learning requirements of each age group. The systematic differentiation of the programmes according to developmental stage enables the Children’s Section to establish a continuous educational and reading pathway, extending from early childhood to the school years.
At the same time, the Children’s Section develops initiatives addressed to parents, educators, and library professionals. Through seminars, professional development sessions, educational activities, and knowledge-sharing initiatives, participants are provided with information concerning the importance of early engagement with books, the development of reading motivation, children’s literature, literacy development, and the pedagogical potential of reading as a means of supporting children’s learning and development. In this way, the Children’s Section extends its educational role beyond direct engagement with children and contributes to the wider ecosystem surrounding children’s reading and literacy.
Alongside its educational dimension, the Children’s Section has developed a distinct research and knowledge-exchange dimension, facilitated by its location within a university environment. The presence and interaction of academics, researchers, students, educators, and library professionals create opportunities for collaboration and for the development of initiatives related to children’s literature, reading engagement, literacy, learning, and the relationship between children, books, and libraries. The university environment therefore provides an important institutional context in which educational practice, academic knowledge, research, and professional expertise can intersect.
This dimension is particularly significant because it enables the Children’s Section to operate not only as a place where educational activities are implemented, but also as an environment in which knowledge concerning children, reading, literacy, and learning can be exchanged, developed, and disseminated. In this respect, its integration within an academic library provides opportunities for connecting theory and practice and for strengthening the relationship between research, professional practice, and community engagement.
The operation of the Children’s Section is also situated within the broader social mission of libraries and their contribution to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Equitable access to knowledge, education, and culture, the creation of opportunities for learning, and the promotion of participation and inclusion constitute important dimensions of the contemporary mission and social responsibility of libraries (IFLA, 2024). Within this framework, the Children’s Section can contribute to the promotion of educational opportunity, literacy development, cultural participation, and meaningful engagement with knowledge from the earliest stages of childhood.
The present paper aims to present the academic and evidence-based programme of the Children’s Section of the University of Cyprus Library, extending from infancy through the school years, and to examine the ways in which a Children’s Section embedded within an academic library can function as an organized environment for education, research, social engagement, and cultural participation.
More specifically, the paper presents the activities and initiatives developed for different age groups, including early reading and literacy initiatives, reading engagement programmes, educational activities, visits by schools and kindergartens, professional development activities for parents and educators, and research-oriented and collaborative initiatives developed within the University of Cyprus environment.
Particular emphasis is placed on the organizational and educational framework through which these initiatives are designed and implemented, as well as on the ways in which the academic environment contributes to their development. The paper seeks to demonstrate how the institutional context of a university library can provide added value to a Children’s Section by facilitating access to academic knowledge, professional expertise, research resources, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The paper therefore presents a practice-based case study of an organized Children’s Section operating within an academic library and contributes to the broader discussion concerning the evolving role of academic libraries in contemporary society. It explores the potential of such a section to extend the educational and social reach of the academic library while simultaneously strengthening its relationship with the wider community.
The operation of the Children’s Section of the University of Cyprus Library represents a tangible expansion of the conventional role of the academic library. Through a structured programme covering the period from infancy to school age, the library establishes a continuous pathway through which children are introduced to and progressively engage with books, reading, knowledge, learning, and culture.
The distinctive significance of this initiative lies in the fact that these activities are implemented within a university environment. The Children’s Section functions as a meeting point for children, families, educators, librarians, students, academics, and researchers, thereby establishing a sustained channel of communication and interaction between the University and the wider society.
Within this context, the Children’s Section should not be understood merely as a space in which activities for children take place. Rather, it constitutes an organized and multidimensional environment in which education, reading, literacy, research, cultural participation, and community engagement converge. Its position within the academic library enables the development of meaningful connections between children and the university, while creating opportunities for the dissemination of knowledge and the strengthening of the library’s societal role.
In this sense, the Children’s Section of the University of Cyprus Library constitutes an organized hub for education, reading engagement, research, social contribution, and culture. Through its activities and initiatives, it demonstrates how an academic library can broaden its institutional mission and respond to educational and social needs extending beyond its traditional user community.
Ultimately, the experience of the Children’s Section illustrates the potential of academic libraries to assume a more outward-facing and socially engaged role by creating structured opportunities for children to encounter books, reading, knowledge, and culture from the earliest years of life. It highlights the possibility of positioning the academic library not only as an institution serving university teaching and research, but also as a dynamic space for lifelong learning, community engagement, cultural participation, and the development of future generations of readers.
