Abstract
The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the widespread adoption of generative AI tools are significantly transforming the ways in which users search for, evaluate, process, and share information. Within this new environment, academic libraries are called upon to redefine their role, not only as spaces providing access to and managing information resources, but also as institutions that mediate, evaluate, and safeguard the quality of knowledge.
Of particular interest is the relationship between academic libraries and Wikipedia, one of the most widely used environments for the open and collaborative production and dissemination of knowledge. Wikipedia often constitutes the first point of contact between users and a particular subject, while its content is also utilized by search engines and contemporary AI systems. Consequently, the reliability, verifiability, and overall quality of Wikipedia articles have become increasingly important within the contemporary information ecosystem.
This paper examines the evolving role of the librarian as an information professional and as a mediator between people, technology, and evidence-based knowledge. It focuses on the potential of academic libraries to contribute actively to the improvement and enrichment of Wikipedia by drawing upon librarians' expertise in information retrieval and source evaluation, information literacy, documentation, knowledge organization, and the management of digital information resources.
At the same time, the paper explores the new challenges arising from generative AI, including the potential reproduction and amplification of inaccurate or insufficiently documented information, the difficulty of distinguishing between primary sources and AI-generated content, and the growing need for greater transparency regarding the origin, provenance, and reliability of information. Within this context, human scholarly judgement and the ability to critically evaluate sources become even more significant.
Drawing on examples of international and Greek initiatives, the paper highlights the potential for collaboration between academic libraries and the Wikipedia community and proposes a model of active library participation in the creation, improvement, and documentation of open educational and scholarly content. It argues that Artificial Intelligence does not diminish the role of the librarian; rather, it creates the need for an even more active and highly skilled professional, capable of connecting technological innovation with scholarly validity and the social trustworthiness of knowledge.
