Digital transformation and the rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence into information services are creating new opportunities, as well as significant challenges, for academic libraries. This paper approaches the library as an open and human-centred knowledge ecosystem in which physical and digital documents, data, intelligent technologies and human expertise coexist and interact.
Adopting an interdisciplinary perspective that brings together librarianship, museology, the conservation of artworks and documentary heritage, and Braille education, the paper explores the transition from conventional digital access towards a model of multisensory and inclusive access to knowledge. Particular attention is given to Artificial Intelligence applications that can support the description and semantic enrichment of collections, the transformation of information into alternative accessible formats, personalised information discovery, and new forms of interaction with scientific, cultural and historical resources.
At the same time, technological innovation cannot be separated from human supervision, critical thinking, information literacy, and responsibility for preserving the authenticity, integrity and material dimension of primary sources. Within AI-supported environments, therefore, the expertise of librarians, museologists, conservators and accessibility educators acquires renewed importance. Their professional judgement can provide the necessary human framework within which computational systems are evaluated, interpreted and responsibly applied.
The paper argues that the academic library of the future does not simply require more Artificial Intelligence. It requires a conscious synthesis of human intelligence, technology, accessibility and care for documentary heritage. Such an approach can transform libraries from repositories of information into inclusive environments of discovery, interpretation and participation, ensuring that technological advancement contributes to knowledge that is not only open, but also meaningful and genuinely accessible to all.
