Academic libraries, as central hubs of knowledge and learning within universities (Nuriddinova et al., 2026), are increasingly expected to redefine their role by adopting participatory approaches that actively engage volunteer communities in the co-creation of new content (Birk et al., 2024), empower volunteer communities, and facilitate equitable access to knowledge in a sustainable manner.
The goal of the workshop is to engage library staff in designing sustainable actions that mobilize volunteer communities through crowdsourcing, with the aim of collectively creating audiobooks, and, more broadly, accessible content for people with print disabilities. The participants will develop a structured model that can be adapted to the library’s evolving needs and does not depend on external funding.
The workshop will be based on the toolkit developed as part of the action “Audiobooks for equal access to knowledge,” implemented by the research and development company Web2Learn in collaboration with Panteion University Library and its Information Centre during the period from December 2025 to September 2026 as part of the EU-funded CAELUM project. The toolkit outlines key processes, requirements, and parameters for the design, implementation, and maintenance of participatory audiobook creation actions tailored to the needs of users with print disabilities.
Through an experiential and collaborative process, participants will work in small groups and use the toolkit to design their own participatory action, completing a sustainability plan and an action plan. The workshop aims to transform the experience and methodology of a specific action into a practical and transferable framework that libraries can use to develop sustainable and inclusive actions that promote equitable access to knowledge.
